𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮: Years ago, I had moved to the United States very suddenly. I knew little to nothing about the American culture, barring of course the books, the music and the movies l was exposed to. The language and interaction style was different, and to make matters harder, the job I was offered was a pre-sales role.
I had been a techie all my career, until then. I was shy, introverted (still am, but was worse) and was used to keeping my inhibitions tightly wrapped inside. But working in pre-sales requires the exact opposite. You have to know how to break the ice, build relationships, ask the right questions and be fairly outgoing, amongst many other things. I can tell you right now that I did NOT feel like I had what it took for this role.
Yet I was determined to learn any which way I could. So, when I found out that a local Hindi radio station needed an RJ, I signed up immediately. It was a great chance to work on the skills that I felt I needed. In fact, unlike what most people think, speaking is only a small part of being an RJ. There is an incredible amount of preparation required. The theme has to be well understood, the timing has to be precise and you must have the ability to think on your feet, all while keeping the tone casual and natural.
It was EXACTLY what I needed to work in sales. So gradually, as I kept trying, my confidence grew. I was able to take what I was learning and apply it to my real job. At one point, my work in sales had me connecting with people from the NBA and the NFL, which is as high a level as it gets. Needless to say, there’s a lot to be said for having stuck to my commitment to do it well.
𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬: Everyone’s area of development is different. Whatever yours may be - don’t restrict yourself in finding a way to grow no matter how weird it sounds to others. The most unconventional channels are sometimes the exact ones you need to grow in your area. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧!
